Freedom

11 02 2011

As I write about the oppression the Dutch people endured during WWII, I am hearing that Mubarak has just stepped down from the office of president of Egypt. The scene is jubilant in Tahrir Square in Cairo, everyone cheering and shouting. One comment that stands out: “This is what freedom looks like”. Living in a country where freedom is taken for granted and often abused, it sobers me to see the joy of a people who have long been under dictatorship. This is how the Dutch people felt on May 5, 1945, when the Germans capitulated.

Let the dancing in the streets commence! Long live freedom.
